For software development I'd recommend two monitors. The ability to have documentation (that's why I run my second screen in portrait; it's super nice for those PDF research papers) or debugger on the second screen is just a killer. In my book, pretty much everything else is kinda secondary. A faster CPU will compile faster and more memory typically doesn't exactly hurt (though around 8GB is probably the bare minimum), but .. like nothing other than a second monitor will save you when you need to debug a rogue fullscreen application.
